Why should you grow heirloom flower seeds?
Over many years of gardening, I have become convinced that growing open-pollinated or heirloom seeds is the way to go. Here are six reasons why:
1. Open-pollinated flowers have more vigor than most hybrids. In general, they are taller and more floriferous than their hybrid counterparts, many of which have been bred to be so compact that there's not much left! Many heirloom flowers are great for cutting , thanks to their taller stems. As an added bonus, fragrant heirloom flowers like sweet peas are often more strongly scented than their modern counterparts.
2. Heirloom flowers reseed true to type, unlike hybrids, which don't come true from seeds that you save yourself. Why spend money buying new hybrid seeds every year when your home-grown plants can produce seeds for you? Some heirloom perennials even bloom the first year from seed.
3. Heirloom flowers and vegetables are the popular varieties beloved by generations of gardeners. They have been tried and proven over time. They are still around because they were admired by gardeners who saved seeds for future generations.
4. Many heirloom flowers produce pollen and nectar for hummingbirds , bees, butterflies and beneficial insects . Growing heirloom flowers helps to save these species, many of which are endangered in our modern world.
5. There are heirloom flower seeds for every garden situation, including shade , drought , deer resistance , containers , groundcovers , rock gardens , cold zones and warm zones .
6. Heirloom flowers make great companion plants for roses , bulbs and ornamental grasses . And, of course, they are perfect for the cottage garden .
