Cleome hassleriana is a tall annual with flowers in a range of cool colors, including shades of pink, purple, rose and white. Also known as Cleome spinosa.

Sowing Cleome Seeds

Start cleome seeds  indoors  6-8 weeks before the last frost date. Or sow outdoors in late spring. Barely cover the seeds with soil. Full sun. Spacing 12".

Cleome 'Cherry Queen'  has cherry-pink flowers that fade to lighter pink, creating a nice two-tone effect. This is the boldest pink cleome, which Sarah Raven recommends in her book,  The Bold and Brilliant Garden . Cleome attracts hummingbirds, who like to perch on the horizontal seed pods at the tops of the tall stems.  Deer resistant . Height 4'.

Cleome 'Helen Campbell'  has elegant, pure white flowers. It makes a wonderful addition to the late summer garden.  It adds height to beds and borders, and it goes beautifully with nearly everything in the garden - perennials, annuals and shrubs. Cleome 'Violet Queen'  has rich violet-purple flowers on tall stems. The vivid flowers attract  hummingbirds . It is wonderful in the  cottage garden . Violet Queen cleome goes well with many other flowers. It looks especially stunning with  lavatera nicotiana  and  zinnia . Cleome makes a good  cut flower , as long as you carefully avoid the thorns along the stems. Height 4'.
