Sowing Carrot Seeds
Sow carrot seeds outdoors 3-6 weeks before the last frost date. Sow on the surface, and cover lightly with soil. Keep moist. Thin to 3" apart. Full sun.

Red Cored Chantenay has a rich flavor, an attractive shape, and a bright orange color, making it a joy to use in the kitchen. Try it fresh, frozen or canned. The 6" roots are tapered and blunt with a red-orange core. It's a hefty carrot that doesn't break off easily when digging. Recommended for heavy clay soil. Heirloom from France, 1870's. Introduced to the U.S. in 1929 by the Burpee Seed Company.

Scarlet Nantes is sweet, juicy and nearly coreless. The reddish-orange color shows its high vitamin content. It's a great choice for fresh eating, freezing and juicing. It can be harvested early for baby carrots. The cylindrical roots grow to 7" long with blunt tips. It needs loose, deeply dug soil where it can put down long roots without forking. French heirloom, 1855. Also known as Early Coreless.

Black Nebula is a dark purple carrot with high levels of anthocyanins and vitamin C. It's great for fresh eating, juicing and cooking. This amazing carrot was improved from a strain found at a market in northern India.

Uzbek Golden is our favorite carrot for eating raw. It has a finer, softer texture than most other carrots, so I can chew it with my TMJ jaw. The flavor is sweet and mild - no bitterness. Medium-short, blunt roots. Danvers type.
