Sowing Tomato Seeds

Start tomato seeds indoors 8 weeks before the last frost date. Sow 1/8" deep. Transplant outside 1-2 weeks after the last frost date. Full sun. Spacing 30-36".

Tomato 'Pink Pioneer'  is a large, pink beefsteak with a delicious, well-balanced flavor. In a blind taste test, three out of five people in our family preferred it over Brandywine. This beautiful tomato is crack-resistant and productive. It's early for a large tomato. The fruits often weigh one pound or more. Potato-leaf foliage. Utah heirloom. Introduced by Diane's Flower Seeds in 2005.

Tomato 'Amish Paste'

Amish Paste tomato  is a wonderful heirloom from the Amish community. It is good for both fresh eating and making sauce. It's one of the few paste types that ripens in our zone 5 garden. Very productive. The meaty, teardrop-shaped fruits weigh 6-8 ounces and have an exceptionally good flavor - much better than your typical paste tomato!

Tomato 'Brandywine' (Sudduth's)

Brandywine, Sudduth's Strain  is the heirloom tomato with the legendary taste. The well-balanced flavor is complex and difficult to describe, but oh, so delicious! The large, pink beefsteaks weigh 1-2 pounds. Brandywine is the yardstick by which all other pink tomatoes are judged. Ben Quisenberry obtained the original seeds from Doris Sudduth Hill, whose family grew it for 80 years. Potato-leaf.

Abe Lincoln  is a popular heirloom tomato with scarlet-red, medium-size fruits that weigh about 8 ounces. It has a classic, tangy tomato flavor. The productivity is good. It was originally introduced in 1923 by the W. H. Buckbee seed company of Rockford, Illinois. Also known as Abraham Lincoln. It is recommended for gardeners who are looking for a "good old-fashioned tomato".

Thessaloniki  is a large, red tomato with robust flavor. It is very productive, making it one of our favorite canning varieties. Fruits weigh about 5 ounces.

This wonderful heirloom tomato was bred in Greece in 1957 by the Ministry of Agriculture Experimental Farm.

Mortgage Lifter tomato  is a moderate to high producer of large, reddish-pink beefsteaks that weigh about one pound. The flesh is solid and meaty with few seeds. The flavor is mild and balanced. It performs best in the south.

Peacevine Cherry  is our all-time favorite cherry tomato. The cherry-size fruits are sweet and tangy with a flavor that rivals a good full-size tomato. Very productive and crack-resistant. It is known for its high levels of vitamin C and a certain amino acid that relaxes the nervous system. Maybe it's my imagination, but I sure felt happy when I was eating these tomatoes in the garden!

Tomato 'Stupice'

Stupice  may look like an ordinary red tomato. But it's the best early tomato I've ever grown. The 2-ounce, round fruits are deliciously juicy and tangy. They are produced on compact plants until the first frost. The potato-leaf foliage is disease-resistant. The name is pronounced Stoo-PEECH-ka. Stupice is an heirloom tomato from Czechoslovakia.

Tomato Anna Russian

Anna Russian tomato  has oxheart-shaped fruits that weigh 8-16 ounces. The large, pink fruits are produced in abundance. They have a fantastic, sweet and juicy flavor that is unique to heart-shaped tomatoes. This is one of our favorite heirlooms. Because of the wispy, drooping foliage, people always ask if the plants are dying. No, it's just how they look. Don't worry. Be happy!

Tomato 'Eva Purple Ball'  is one of the prettiest heirloom tomatoes. The dark pink, tennis ball-size fruits are produced in abundance. They are virtually immune to cracking - great for the farmers market. The fruits weigh 4-5 ounces and have excellent flavor. This treasure was brought to New Jersey in the late 1800's by immigrants from the Black Forest region of Germany. 

Tomato 'Giant Crimson'

Giant Crimson tomato  is a very rare heirloom recently brought back from near-extinction by Luke Marion. The 5-8 ounce fruits are crimson-red and beautifully formed. They have a good, old-fashioned tomato flavor that we love. They aren't exactly giant, but they are certainly worth growing. We got our original seeds from Luke. Mexico Midget tomato  has tiny, 1/2" fruits that pack a punch. The flavor is intense and acidic. It's one of the few tomatoes that gives me heartburn, but I love it! So do our customers, who have repeatedly requested it. Mexico Midget makes an attractive garnish for any dish. This heirloom tomato was brought to the U.S. by a truck driver who said that he found it growing wild in Mexico.

Early Gem  is our own introduction. Even with all the famous heirloom tomatoes in the garden, this little salad tomato is still one of our favorites. The red, round, 1.5" fruits ripen early and continuously all summer long. The sweet and tangy flavor is well-balanced. Productivity is excellent, but not overwhelming. It was discovered in a patch of Abe Lincoln tomatoes.

Abe Lincoln Original  is the largest red tomato we've ever grown. It's also one of the tastiest. It's not very productive, and it has very few seeds. But it's worth growing for the smooth texture and delicious, well-balanced flavor. It also ripens earlier than most other giant tomatoes. Tomato 'Bulgarian Triumph'

Bulgarian Triumph  is a highly productive tomato with medium-size, round to slightly flattened, red fruits. It's slow to get going, but it increases in production right up until the end. I froze many bags of these lovely tomatoes to use for winter sauces. The crack-resistant fruits weigh 3-4 ounces, appearing in clusters on regular-leaf vines. Bulgarian heirloom from Manfred Hahm-Hartmann.
