Penstemon canescens is native to the Eastern U.S. from Vermont to Alabama. It blooms in May with light purple flowers that have white throats. The stems are covered with tiny hairs.  The tubular flowers attract  hummingbirds

Penstemon canescens is relatively easy to germinate and grow. The leaves are semi-evergreen. Deer resistant. Hardy perennial in zones 4-8.

Sow penstemon seeds outdoors in pots in late fall or winter. Or start indoors, then  refrigerate  the pots for 6 weeks. Barely cover the seeds with soil. Full sun.
