Penstemon cobaea has large, light to dark purple flowers that bloom in early to mid summer. It is one of the showiest of the penstemon species. It makes a nice  companion plant for roses . 

Penstemon cobaea is more  shade tolerant  than most other species. The large, tubular flowers attract  hummingbirds . 

Also known as Showy Beardtongue. Hardy perennial in zones 4-9.
