Aquilegia (Columbine) Seeds

Aquilegia is a hardy perennial with flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. Columbine blooms in a wide range of colors, heights and forms.

Sowing Aquilegia Seeds

Start columbine seeds indoors in late winter. Barely cover the seeds with soil, then  refrigerate  for 3 weeks. Full sun to part shade. Spacing 12".

Aquilegia alpina  is a lovely columbine species with deep violet-blue flowers. It is native to Europe, especially the Swiss Alps. 

Aquilegia alpina is naturally compact, making it a good choice for  rock gardens , the front of the border, or along the edge of a woodland path. It's very hardy, and it self sows where it's happy. Hardy in zones 3-9.

Aquilegia 'Crimson Star'  is an impressive columbine with bright crimson-red flowers that have white corollas and showy golden stamens. It's a good variety for attracting  hummingbirds .

Crimson Star columbine produces bushy plants that are vigorous and free flowering. The flowers are great for cutting.

Aquilegia 'Ruby Port'  is an heirloom columbine with dark ruby-red, double flowers with short spurs. This is the first columbine I ever grew, and it's still one of my favorites. A classic!

Columbine 'Ruby Port' has tall stems for cutting. It looks especially stunning in the garden next to the silver-green foliage of  Lychnis coronaria 'Alba' .

Aquilegia flabellata var. pumila 'Selection'  is a dwarf columbine for the rock garden or the edge of a path. The nodding, blue and white flowers appear early in the season on short plants with blue-green leaves. 

This lovely columbine originated in Japan and was introduced by Jelitto Perennial Seeds in 1986. It won an Award of Garden Merit. Hardy in zones 3-9.

Aquilegia rockii  has graceful flowers that bloom in late spring in a rich lilac color. The soft yellow-edged corollas and reddish stems add more interest. The patterned leaves have a spot of silver in the center and a dark purple border.

Aquilegia rockii is native to China. It was named after Joseph Rock, the plant explorer who first collected it. Hardy in zones 5-9.

Semiaquilegia ecalcarata  is an adorable little plant. It looks like a miniature columbine with compact mounds of delicate leaves and tiny, bell-shaped flowers that bloom in a pretty, lilac-pink color.
