Allium 'Purple Sensation' has vivid balls of purple flowers on tall stems in late spring to early summer when there are few other flowers in the garden.

I love the stunning color of Allium 'Purple Sensation' so much that I planted it on both sides of the path in my old-fashioned rose garden. Hardy in zones 3-9. Requires a long period of cold-moist stratification.

Allium cernuum

Allium cernuum (Nodding Onion)

Allium cernuum  blooms in midsummer with nodding clusters of purplish-pink flowers. It's a good  groundcover , spreading to form a dense patch.

Allium cernuum tolerates a wide range of conditions from sandy or rocky soil to damp clay. It likes full sun or part  shade . Hardy in zones 3-10. Requires 8 weeks cold-moist stratification.

Allium christophii

Allium christophii (Star of Persia)

Allium christophii  is one of my favorite alliums. The large, round balls of star-shaped flowers bloom in early summer in a light shade of lavender-mauve. They look good with  columbine , which blooms at the same time.

Allium christophii is  deer resistant . Hardy in zones 4-9. Requires 8 weeks cold-moist stratification.

Allium caesium  is native to central Asia. The 4" globes of indigo-blue flowers bloom for a long time in June. 

Allium caesium attracts bees and  beneficial insects . Place it near the front of the border with other small perennials. It appreciates well-drained soil in full sun. Hardy in zones 4-7. Requires cold-moist stratification.

Allium moly

Allium moly (Lily Leek)

Allium moly  has cheerful, bright yellow flowers in 2"-wide umbels. It blooms in late May. We like to scatter it throughout the front of the border where it can bloom in mass before the later perennials and annuals have their show.

These seeds are from Allium moly 'Jeannine', which is a superior selection. Hardy perennial in zones 3-7. Requires cold-moist stratification.

Garlic chives  are tall and upright with wide, flat leaves. They have a strong garlic flavor, and they are useful in organic gardens. They repel aphids, and the flowers attract bees,  butterflies  and beneficial insects. 

Allium tuberosum is a good companion plant for roses. The starry white flowers look lovely, and the plants deter pests. Easy to grow. Hardy in zones 3-9.
