Sowing Mirabilis jalapa Seeds

Soak  Mirabilis jalapa seeds for 24 hours, then sow outdoors after the last frost date. Cover lightly with soil. Full sun. Height 24". Spacing 12".

Mirabilis jalapa 'Salmon Sunset'  has salmon-orange flowers with a touch of pink. It reminds me of a tropical sunset. It's also a good hummingbird flower. Four O'Clock 'Salmon Sunset' is fabulous in warm color schemes. It mixes well with red, gold and white flowers. Add a bit of blue to cool it down. This beautiful variety is a real gem.  Deer resistant .

Mirabilis jalapa Red  has glowing red flowers that open in the evening with a sweet fragrance. This is the best four o'clock for attracting  hummingbirds . It's my all-time favorite variety. I grow it as a foundation planting on the south side of the house. There's something special about the color, which reminds me of fruit punch. My strain has better coloring than some of the commercial strains.

Mirabilis jalapa 'Alba'  has pure white flowers that absolutely glow in the twilight. The delicious, sweet  fragrance  can be enjoyed from several feet away. It's the perfect plant for an evening stroll through the garden. White four o'clocks go well with many other perennials and annuals. These are bushy plants, so give them adequate space.

Mirabilis jalapa Yellow  has fragrant, trumpet-shaped flowers in a soft shade of yellow that combines beautifully with many other colors in the garden. Mirabilis jalapa is believed to have been grown by the ancient Aztecs in South America, hence the common name, Marvel of Peru. In cold zones, give it a warm location where it will thrive for many years by  self-sowing  or perennializing.
