Sowing Melon Seeds

Sow melon seeds outdoors after the last frost date, 1/2" deep. Space 2' apart in rows. Or sow in hills spaced 4-6' apart. Thin to 3 plants per hill. Full sun.

Melon 'Amish' (85 days)

Amish melon  is one of our all-time favorites. It's a reliable producer of oval-shaped, 4-7 pound fruits. The juicy, orange flesh is sweet and flavorful. This excellent muskmelon was introduced by Seed Savers Exchange in 1983. As gardeners, we are deeply indebted to the Amish community for preserving so many wonderful heirloom vegetables. This is another example of their fine work.

Melon 'Ha'Ogen' (78 days)

Ha'Ogen  is our favorite green-fleshed melon. The 3-4 pound fruits ripen early. Good production of fragrant melons with a sweet flavor. Also known as Israel Melon, although it may have actually originated in Hungary. It's easy to pick. Just watch for the green skins to turn amber. The crack-resistant fruits are perfect for the farmer's market. Hungarian heirloom.

Melon 'Northern Arizona' (85 days)

You'll never find this rare heirloom melon in your local grocery store. It's too juicy and thin-skinned to survive shipping. But it's perfect for the home garden. The sweet, cantaloupe-colored flesh melts in your mouth. The large, teardrop-shaped fruits weigh 6-8 lbs.  Melon 'Northern Arizona'  was brought to Arizona by the pioneers. We obtained our original seeds from John Jeavons many years ago.

Melon 'Prescott Fond Blanc' (80 days)

Prescott Fond Blanc  is an old French melon with fascinatingly beautiful fruits. The gray-green fruits are deeply ribbed, turning to straw color at maturity. The firm, salmon-colored flesh has good substance and sweetness. 4-9 pounds.

Melon 'Petit Gris de Rennes' (85 days)

Petit Gris de Rennes  is one of the best Charentais-type French melons. It has a beautiful, sea-green rind. The firm and juicy flesh is sweet and flavorful. It begins to crack when fully ripe, so check the melon patch often. 2-4 pounds. This French heirloom was first discovered in the garden of the Bishop of Rennes around 1636. It has been treasured and preserved for many generations.

Melon 'Crane' (85 days)

Crane melon  is a round cantaloupe with a soft texture and honey-sweet flavor. It was bred by Oliver Crane in Santa Rosa, California and introduced in 1920. The netted rind is split-resistant. Best for long-summer climates. 4 pounds.

Melon 'Noir des Carmes' (85 days)

Noir des Carmes melon  has deeply ribbed fruits with a black-green skin that turns mottled orange when ripe. The orange flesh has a complex flavor and lovely aroma. To avoid splitting, don't overwater near harvest time. 3 pounds.
