Poppy 'Peony Mix' has large, double flowers that resemble peonies. It blooms in shades of red, pink, purple and white. The blue-green seed pods can be used in dried flower arrangements. Peony poppies grow best in the cool weather of spring. Sow outdoors several weeks before the last frost date. Sow in the fall in mild winter areas. Height 30".

Poppy 'Amphora' has white flowers with pink margins. The particular shade of pink and the width of the margin varies. Some flowers have smooth edges, and others are fringed. I obtained the seeds for this gorgeous lavender poppy from an elderly friend who grew it in his garden for many years. The light purple flowers have dark purple blotches and lots of small, frilly petals around the center. Like most double poppies, each bloom lasts for several days. Poppies attract bees, which makes them useful companion plants in the vegetable garden. Height 30".

The flowers are lovely, but another reason to grow this breadseed poppy is for the creamy white seeds that have a nutty flavor without bitterness. Papaver somniferum 'Elka White' is a very old Slovakian heirloom from Chrenovec-Brusno, Slovakia. The large, unvented pods don't spill the seeds. Height 36".

Poppy 'Double Purple' is a lovely variety with semi-double to fully double, soft purple flowers. It looks somewhat like our introduction, Lavender Dress, but we don't think it's as nice - probably because it is commercially produced without the quality selection that we perform. Poppy 'Imperial Pink' has ragged, medium-pink petals with a lavender blotch at the center. The flowers have a graceful appearance as they bloom atop slender stems that wave in the breeze. This lovely poppy makes a great filler in beds and borders. The soft colors go with nearly everything. We especially like the unusual shape of the flowers. Height 30".
Poppy 'Fuchsia' (Papaver somniferum)

Poppy 'Fuchsia' has fuchsia-red blooms with violet-purple blotches. The round pods contain small, black seeds. I sowed a single-flowered poppy mix in the fall, and this is the only seedling that survived the unusually cold winter. It bloomed early the next year on a tall, bushy plant with many stems. I don't know how true to type the color will be. You might end up with a mix. Height 30"

This interesting variety was developed by Frank Morton of Wild Garden Seed. It's new for us this year, so we will have more to say about it later. In the meantime, we will try to take a photo.

Poppy 'Jimi's Flag' has single, scarlet-red flowers with deep purple at the base. The petals have feathered edges. Frank Morton bred this exciting poppy by crossing Danish Flag with Purple Peony. It looks like a winner, and we will have more to say about it when our own plants bloom. I hope it's better than the old Drama Queen , which has deteriorated in the commercial seed supply.
